Career - Plastic Surgery Registrar

Dr Shah

Do you do cosmetic surgery?
No, because I am in a public hospital so I am mostly operating on cancers and burns.

Describe a typical day:
Ward rounds start at 7.30am and then depending on the day time is either spent in the operating theatre or in out patient clinics assessing new patients or following up people I have operated on.

I do a 24 hr on call once a week looking after mainly hand and facial trauma patients.

Did you study maths in years 11 or 12?
Yes, as I thought it would be interesting and important in my future career as a doctor. You need to do very well at maths to get into medicine at university.

Why do you like your job?
It is very varied and I like the practical side of surgery combined with working with people.

Do you have any advice for someone considering this career?
It can be a long and arduous path including 5 years at university and further training.

However, it is definitely worth the effort as the job can be very rewarding and fulfilling.
